About Colors and Stencils

About the Colors

According to the 1850 Ordnance Manual, various colors were specified for artillery chests. Most of the small arms ammunition chests prior to 1861 were either unfinished or painted a color called olive. Apparently olive is similar to what we call olive drab today. The 1861 Ordnance Manual specified paint colors for both artillery and small arms ammunition boxes.

According to the 1861 Ordnance Manual,  ammunition chests for .58 cal. muskets and rifles were to be painted olive. Cadet musket.58 .cal ammunition chests were to be painted gray. The color for .44 cal. Army Revolver Ammunition Chests was olive and the .36 cal. Navy Pistol ammunition chest were to be painted blue.

About the Stencils

All stencils are hand-cut and hand-painted with a brush. The stencils I personally design and cut based on historical images that have been painstakingly researched. No spray paint is used on any of our products.

The colors that we use for stenciling are either black or white semi gloss paint. The stencils themselves are hand lettered and cut. Unless otherwise specified, the style of the lettering in our products is block lettering similar to markings that we have seen on boxes from the Civil War.

Customized stenciling is available on an item by item basis.

We have also produced non-military items stenciled with a Spenserian style script.
