.45-70 Ammo Box

In 1873, the Army adopted the Springfield .45-70 "Trapdoor" Rifle and also the 55 Grain .45 caliber Carbine (.45-55). This crate is for the ammunition for the Rifle made at the Frankford PA Arsenal. About this time, the arsenal started to use seals made with sealing wax and the Frankford Arsenal logo. The seals were applied to two screws on the top and two on the bottom of the box to prevent tampering. We have reproduced the seals on this box as well as the date stamped on the end of the box.
